Textus Latinus (Ex Sermónibus sancti Augustíni epíscopi, Sermo 23 A, 1–4: CCL 41, 321–323)

English Translation (corrected)

The Lord has had mercy on us

We are blessed if we also put into practice what we hear and sing. For our hearing is the sowing of the seed, while our action is the fruit of that seed. Having said this by way of introduction, I would admonish your charity not to enter the church fruitlessly, hearing so many good things but failing to act well. For by his grace we have been saved, as the Apostle says, not by works, lest anyone should boast; it is by his grace that we have been saved.

It was not that some good life of ours came first, which God looked down upon with love and approval(affection), saying: "Let us come to the aid of these people; let us quickly help them, because they are living well." Our life was displeasing to him; everything that we ourselves were doing in us was displeasing to him. But what he himself had done in us was not displeasing to him. Therefore, he will condemn what we have done, but he will save what he himself has done.

We were not good, then. Yet he had mercy on us and sent his Son to die, not for the good but for the evil, not for the just but for the ungodly.

For Christ died for the ungodly. And what follows? Hardly anyone will die for a righteous person, though perhaps someone might dare to die for a good person. Perhaps someone may indeed be found who would dare to die for a good person. But for an unjust person, for an ungodly person, for a sinner(a wicked person), who would be willing to die except Christ alone, who was so just that he could justify even the unjust?

Therefore, my brothers, we had no good works; all our works were evil. Yet although human deeds were such, his mercy did not abandon humanity.

God sent his Son to redeem us, not with gold or silver, but at the price of his blood poured out: the spotless Lamb led to sacrifice for stained sheep—if they may merely be called stained and not completely corrupted. Such, then, is the grace we have received. Let us live worthily of the grace we have received, and let us not do injury to so great a grace.

So great a physician has come to us and has forgiven all our sins. If we wish to become sick again, we will not only bring ruin upon ourselves, but will also show ourselves ungrateful to the physician.

Let us therefore follow the paths he has shown us, above all the path of humility, which he himself became for us. He showed us the path of humility by his commandments, and he walked it by suffering for us. In order that he might die for us—though as God he could not die—the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Immortal One assumed mortality so that he might die for us and, by his death, put our death to death.

This is what the Lord did; this is what he bestowed upon us. The great One was humbled; having been humbled, he was slain; having been slain, he rose again and was exalted, so that he might not leave us dead in the underworld, but might exalt in himself, in the resurrection of the dead, those whom he has already exalted now in the faith and confession of the righteous.

Thus he has given us humility as our path. If we hold fast to it, we shall confess(praise) the Lord, and not without reason do we sing: "We will praise you, O God; we will praise you and call upon your name."

No éramos, pues, buenos.
